Don't get me wrong, splitting wood by hand is always going to be hard work. But this simple little device really does the job. A tree fell in my yard last year ... although I cut it into workable lengths I've been dreading trying to split those lengths because my splitting axe (shaped sort of like a grenade wedge) was just bouncing off. I got one of these at Northern Tool and it goes right into the log where my axe would barely make a dent. I've done larger pieces with it too, 14-16 inches.
